Skills & Qualifications
Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP):
Education: Master’s degree (or higher) in communicative sciences or disorders from an accredited program. If you are from a non-CAA-accredited school, you must include an ASHA letter of acceptance.
Experience: Typically, 400 supervised practicum hours and around 36 weeks of professional experience (or through a Clinical Fellowship) are required.
Licensing: Apply through TDLR; may need to pass a national exam.
Occupational Therapist (OT):
Pathways: You can apply either by examination (if you’ve not passed NBCOT or are not licensed elsewhere) or by endorsement (if you are NBCOT-certified and licensed in another state). Must meet criteria in Texas §364.1, §364.2, or §364.4 accordingly.
Renewal: 30 continuing education hours every two years; license expires at the end of the holder’s birth month.
Physical Therapist (PT):
Education: Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from a CAPTE-accredited program is required.
Licensing: Must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) and take the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment Module (TX JAM) exam.
Continuing Education: 30 continuing competence units (CEUs) must be completed every two years, including at least 2 hours focused on ethics and professional responsibility.
Music Therapist:
Certification: Must complete a bachelor’s degree in music therapy to sit for the national MT-BC board certification (from CBMT).
State Recognition: Texas does not currently license music therapists, though efforts are ongoing by the Texas State Task Force for Music Therapy Recognition.
Special Education Teacher:
Teacher Certification: Must have a bachelor’s degree and complete an educator preparation program.
Certification: Must hold a valid Special Education certificate. For those serving as teacher of record, the appropriate grade-band content certification is required, or demonstrated competency via the Texas Content Competency Worksheet.
Dyslexia Training: All educator preparation candidates must receive instruction in dyslexia detection and multisensory teaching strategies.
Exam: You must pass the TExES Special Education EC-12 exam.
